The Short Version
Both brokers give credit, not cash, when you cancel. The difference is what you can add. DVC Rental Store offers an optional Cashback Protection policy that pays a refund to your original payment method. David's says it gives no cash refunds and its credit has no cash value; it recommends separate travel insurance. And both brokers step the credit down as your trip gets closer.
So the real cost of renting isn't just the points price. It's the points price plus how much of it you get back if a family plan, a storm, or a sick kid changes the trip.

DVC RENTAL STORE: TWO WAYS TO CANCEL
Read on the company's cancellation page (last modified Oct 18, 2024; footer says 2026).

The page footnotes the 75% tier as applying to funds paid above the initial 25% payment. Credit is usable for up to two years from the original travel dates.

The refund is calculated on eligible funds minus the protection premium you paid. The cancellation page doesn't state the fee or the buy-by deadline. In a Sept 21 email, DVC Rental Store said Cashback Protection has to be added at least 121 days before check-in. Ask for the current fee in your quote.
DAVID'S VACATION CLUB RENTALS: CREDIT ONLY
Read on the company's cancellation policy page (Oct 28, 2026).
- No cash refunds. Eligible cancellations produce a Deferred Dreams Travel Credit with "no cash value."
- Applies to reservations booked on or after March 18, 2024 and paid in full. Earlier bookings fall under an "All Sales Final" agreement.

- The initial deposit earns no credit.
- The credit is valid for 36 months from issue and can go toward new David's rentals, cruises and Adventures by Disney. Park tickets and dining plans aren't eligible.
- Changing the lead guest, dates, resort or room type counts as a cancellation.
- If a reservation paid with credit is cancelled again, the credit becomes void.
- David's recommends separate travel or trip-cancellation insurance, especially inside the final 14 to 15 days. Its own pages disagree slightly on whether the cutoff is 14 or 15 days, so confirm.

Day-count tiers differ, so "30 days out" lands in different brackets. Read your own terms.
Illustration only: on a $3,000 stay cancelled 90 days out, a 75% credit is $2,250 in future credit, not $2,250 back. And if the credit is for a trip you may not take within the window, it can expire unused.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR WHO SHOULD RENT
- Fixed dates, stable plans (school-break trip, set vacation week): the credit tiers matter less. Book and go.
- Uncertain dates, young kids, hurricane season: the cash option matters more. Ask your broker whether protection is available and what the fee is, and run the numbers against simply booking a refundable room at Disney. See renting vs booking direct.
- Booking far out (7 to 11 months): you hold more of the credit schedule in your favor, but your cash is tied up longer.

DVC Rental Cancellation Policy: The Questions to Ask Before You Pay
- Is the credit or refund based on the day I cancel, or the day you approve it?
- What is the cash option's fee, and what's the last day I can buy it?
- Are the percentages on total price or on funds paid after the deposit?
- Can I transfer the credit to someone else?
- What happens to my credit if I rebook and cancel again?
